Kudos to our AP Scholars
Nineteen Sanford students and alumni have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on college level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. The AP Scholars are: Jasmine Caulfield, Zhengyi Chen, Stephanie Cramer, Cindy Duan (recognized as a National AP Scholar), Charles Frick, Ocean Gibson, Katherine Grant, Josiah Hannon, Phoebe Hering, Jacqueline Kalil, Joshua Katz, Thaddeus Potter, Nataliya Prokhnesvska, Emily Simonton, Hannah Wagner, Peter Walpole, Ishani Winston, Madelyn Wojnisz, and Chenyi Yang.

Lego League Team qualifies for champion’s tournament
Fourth graders advance to the next stage
The Wizard Warriors, a group of ten Sanford students, have qualified to participate in the First State FLL Champion’s tournament Saturday, Jan. 28th at the University of Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center. The team earned its spot following a regional competition at Oxford High School involving 44 teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. The competition was based on core values and teamwork, a research project, and a robotic design and competition section. This program, supported by our community of educators and parents, is one that enhances Sanford’s science, technology, and math programs, as well as teaching the true value of teamwork. Sanford celebrates seventh Day of Service
Sanford students, faculty, administrators, and staff members are observing and celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the seventh annual Day of Service. MLK Day activities include an all-school assembly, community service work on and off campus, and education about Dr. King’s focus on tolerance, non-violence, and service.

Thompson named WDEL Athlete of the Week
Sanford basketball player Sabri Thompson was recently named WDEL’s Male High School Athlete of the Week. A Sanford junior and one of the captains of this year’s team, Sabri says he’d like to major in engineering in college. Click here to view the WDEL segment.

Middle school student wins Geography Bee
Moves one step closer to $25,000 college scholarship
Markus Bosick recently won the school-level competition in the 24th annual National Geographic Bee. The school winners, including Markus, will now take a written test in hopes of qualifying for state-level competition in March. During the final round of competition in May, the first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galápagos Islands.

Sanford champs in tournament
The Sanford boys’ basketball team recently captured a championship title in the annual Kappa Klassic at Glasgow High School. The Warriors defeated Red Lion Christian Academy in the final round, winning by a score of 48-39. Junior Sabri Thompson was named tournament MVP, and fellow classmate Kyle Michael Rose won the All-Academic Award for having the highest GPA on the championship team.

Lego League events support STEM efforts
More than 100 children from Sanford and other area schools recently participated in a regional Junior FIRST®LEGO® League Expo at Sanford. The event was designed to build interest in science and engineering in children ages 6 through 9. A few weeks ago, twenty fifth and sixth grade Sanford students recently participated in a FIRST® LEGO® League competition at the Conrad School of Science. The event provided a great opportunity for middle school aged students to get involved in hands-on engineering, mathematics, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Musicians receive All-State honors
Four Sanford musicians have been selected for All-State Band and Orchestra. Congratulations to Junior Band honorees Jessica Zbranak (clarinet) and Chase Rapine (alto sax); Senior Band selection Adam Bubes (trumpet); and high-scoring violinist Younsoo Park who was selected for the orchestra.

Students honored for service
Adam Caulfield, Cheris Congo, and Mia Pastore have received Sanford’s first Jefferson Awards of this school year. The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. The freshmen were selected as a result of their outstanding commitment to Sanford’s Empty Bowls Project, a grassroots program designed to fight hunger in America. Their efforts during the summer resulted in the creation of 90 ceramic bowls that will be sold along with many other hand-crafted bowls at a Sanford event later this year. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Food Bank of Delaware.
