Sanford Students to Defend Punkin Chunkin Title

The Upper School science and engineering club, Project Beyond, will defend its championship title in the Youth 11–17 Trebuchet division of the 23rd Annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin competition in Bridgeville, Delaware, from October 31–November 2. The team has conducted several trial launches with Sanford Slinger and hopes to top the event record of hurling a pumpkin 749 feet. Friday, October 31st will be a busy day on the Sanford campus. The Grade 5 Wax Museum, featuring characters from some of literature’s greatest works, will be open in the Middle School Library from 1 to 3 p.m. The Lower School Halloween Parade will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Upper School will be closed for parent conferences. Sanford Student Honored for Philanthropy Work

The Association of Fundraising Professionals DE, Brandywine Chapter (AFP) has announced that freshman Annie Rose Baum will be presented a Youth in Philanthropy Award for her work to raise awareness of the genocide in the Darfur Region of Sudan. Alarmed by what was happening in Darfur, Annie Rose appealed to students, parents, and employees, asking them to contribute to her UNICEF drive to support victims in Darfur. The campaign raised more than $5,600. Annie will receive her award during AFP’s annual Philanthropy Day Luncheon in November.

Sanford Students Named AP Scholars

More than 30 current and former Sanford School students have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on college–level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. Two students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award, twelve qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, six qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, and twelve qualified for the AP Scholar Award. Success in AP Courses Qualifies Sanford to Compete for National Award

The College Board recently announced that Sanford has one of the best student success rates in Advanced Placement (AP) math, science, and technology courses in Delaware. This accomplishment qualifies Sanford to apply for the prestigious Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. The awards—which are presented by the Siemens Foundation in partnership with the College Board—acknowledge exceptional achievement and recognize students, teachers, and high schools. The application and selection processes will be conducted during the next few months, and winners will be notified in February, 2009.

More than 15% of Senior Class Receive National Merit Honors

Sixteen percent of Sanford’s graduating class are being honored by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Katie Brown, Chris Copeland, and Ella Wagner have been named semifinalists, giving them an opportunity to compete for monetary awards that will be offered next spring. Semifinalists placed among the top one percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the competition. Louis Baum, Ariel Majidi, Jillian Markowitz, Katrina Medoff, Lauren Ritter, Gillian Sheffy, and Richard Townsend have been named commended students, placing them among the top five percent of this year’s competing students.

NCTE Honors Sanford Student for Excellent Writing Talent

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has recognized Sanford senior Ella Wagner as an outstanding writer in the 2008 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing program. Ella was one of 525 high school seniors selected from more than 1,700 students nominated last year by their teachers. Ella and Sanford School have received certificates of commendation and NCTE Website recognition. Congratulations to this fine scholar.

SRTC Production Recognized by USA Weekend Magazine

The Sanford Repertory Theatre Company production of Evita has won an honorable mention award in the Showstopper 2008 competition.
