Congratulations to our Middle School Science Olympiad medalists

Fifth and sixth-grade students recently won 21 medals in the 2009 Catholic and Independent School Science Olympiad. Eighteen schools took part in the competition. The students who won medals were Shannon Babcock, Evan Carswell, Laura Davies, Lars Eble, Garrett Jester, Brett Kosinski, Kelsey Mendell, Bridget Ramzy, Chase Rapine, Peter Sabini, Steven Torres, Charlotte Vanlancker, and Jessica Zbranak. Seniors Named Presidential Scholar Candidates

Chris Copeland and Richard Townsend have been selected as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Established in 1964, this prestigious program recognizes some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in a variety of areas including outstanding scholarship, leadership, creativity, and service. Chris and Richard are being considered for selection as two of 500 semifinalists. The Presidential Scholars Program, which selects up to 141 scholars annually, is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

Sanford Students Named National Merit Finalists

Katie Brown, Chris Copeland, and Ella Wagner have been named finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship competition. Their selection qualifies the Sanford seniors to compete for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $34 million, that will be offered in the spring. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Katie, Chris, and Ella were selected from more than 16,000 semifinalists.

Sanford students receive awards from Delaware’s art educators

Art Educators of Delaware (AED) has honored two Sanford students for outstanding work they submitted in the Scholastic Art Awards competition. Senior Katy Wiedmann received a $1,000 scholarship, and seventh grade student Nate Reynolds received a $100 award. AED, a state affiliate of the National Art Education Association, facilitates the Delaware Regional Scholastic Art Awards each year. This year’s awards were presented on February 14th at Delaware State University. A complete list of Sanford’s winners will be published in the next issue of SANFORD magazine.

SRTC presents Into the Woods

Upper School engineering group named semi-finalist in national competition

The Upper School Engineering Design Team was recently named a semi-finalist in the National Engineering Design Challenge, sponsored by the Junior Engineering Technical Society (www.jets.org). The semi-final stage of the contest was a virtual competition in which videos that describe and demonstrate the team’s projects were submitted. Click here to view Sanford’s video. The members of the team are Alex Beattie, Sarah Brennan, Megan Brown, Dan Greene, Aryeh Kuller, Seung Tae Lee, David Libert, Liz McCarthy, Katrina Medoff, Lauren Ritter, Jesse Taylor, and Cameron Vansant.

Sanford athletic teams recognized for sportsmanship

Board 11 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials recently presented the Elijah Towns Sportsmanship Award to the Sanford girls’ and boys’ basketball teams for the 2007–08 season. Sanford Athletic Director Joan Samonisky said, “I am extremely proud of our teams and coaches, in the way they conduct themselves, and represent our school.” This is believed to be the first time one school has won the boys’ and girls’ awards for the same season.
