Middle School Student Wins Writing Award

Nick Meehan’s essay, “My Dream,” has earned third place in the grade 7–9 division in the News Journal Black History Month writing contest. Students were asked to recall Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream and write of their own dream for the future. Nick envisions a peaceful world where problems are solved without violence, terrorism or war. By capturing his vision so eloquently, Nick will receive a $50 savings bond and a certificate of award. Congratulations to this fine writer.

Duan Earns Third Straight Title in Tennis

Two-time defending state tennis champion Cindy Duan has won her third state title in first singles play. The Sanford sophomore captured the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) championship in straight sets during the final round of the girls’ tournament at the University of Delaware Field House Courts. Home & School Meeting Tonight

The final 2008–2009 Home & School meeting will be held tonight in the Stephen May Hall Commons. The evening will begin with a reception to thank parents for their support. In addition, Director of Technology Suzy Hoffmann and Technology Assistant Amanda Heberton will introduce RenWeb, a new information system that Sanford will use to communicate with students and families. All parents are invited to attend.

Solar Car Club Shines in Competition

The Solar Car Club recently took second and fourth places in the Delaware Junior Solar Sprint Competition in Magnolia, Delaware. The club also won the design competition with its fourth-place car. The members of the group are Tyler Dekleva, Zack Falcon, Oliver Fleischmann, Michael Gilbert, David Hoffman, Nic Natali, Cristina Riegel, Rachel Rosa, and Brian Zhang. Middle School math teacher Bruce Pill is the club’s faculty adviser. Middle School Students Recognized for Poetry Writing

Creative Communication has selected the work of five Middle School students for inclusion in their upcoming A Celebration of Poets anthology. The winners, in the grade 7–9 division, are Eric Cecil for “Orange,” Matt Clendaniel for “Searing Glaciers,” Oliver Fleischmann for “Shade of Red,” Chloe Hunter for “Photograph,” and Emily Regan for “The Seasons Come and Go.”

Sanford Student Finalist in Nationwide Contest

Third-grader Grace Para is one of four regional finalists in the Doodle 4 Google contest. As a finalist, Grace has won a trip to the Google New York office and a T-shirt printed with her doodle. The national winner, who will be selected by popular vote, also will win a $15,000 college scholarship and a laptop computer. In addition, the winner’s school will receive a $25,000 grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab.
