DSU to Honor Joan Samonisky

Sanford Athletic Director Joan Samonisky will be honored for her contributions to women’s athletics during the Delaware Diamond Extravaganza. The event honors commitment to excellence in women’s athletics, and proceeds support women’s athletic programs at Delaware State University. Four-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. The event will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Dover on February 19, 2010.

Middle School Teacher’s Writing Published

A story written by English teacher Christine Yasik has been accepted by the National Gallery of Writing for publication. “Savoring the Summer of 2007,” a story about two of Mrs. Yasik’s professional development experiences, is featured on the web-based Mosaic Gallery which is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English. The story will be available online until June 30th at http://galleryofwriting.org/galleries/46036.

Sanford Students Hit a High Note in All-State Band

Five Sanford students were recently selected for All-State Band. The All-State Senior Band members are juniors Hannah Wagner and Katie Grant. Freshmen Adam Bubes and Erik Somerville were selected for the All-State Junior Band. David Hoffman, an eighth grade Middle School student, was chosen for the All-State Junior Jazz Band.

Maya Ram was recognized recently at the Hagley Museum for placing first in an essay writing contest. This competition was in conjunction with the museum’s recent tour entitled Paths of Progress: Patents Past and Present. Students were asked to compose a composition which explored the role of patents in safeguarding the intellectual property of our nation’s innovators. Maya’s essay examined the right of citizens to maintain their intellectual property and considered what society would be like if this right was not protected. As the winner of this contest, Maya received a $100 cash prize.

Senior Class Canned Food Drive: This Saturday

The senior class of Sanford School will conduct a canned food drive at the Hockessin Memorial Hall/TD Bank parking lot on Saturday, January 16th from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. All of the food that is collected will be donated to the Food Bank of Delaware. The collection is part of Sanford’s fifth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service community service project.
