Sanford champs in tournament

The Sanford boys’ basketball team recently captured a championship title in the annual Kappa Klassic at Glasgow High School. The Warriors defeated Red Lion Christian Academy in the final round, winning by a score of 48-39. Junior Sabri Thompson was named tournament MVP, and fellow classmate Kyle Michael Rose won the All-Academic Award for having the highest GPA on the championship team.

Lego League events support STEM efforts

More than 100 children from Sanford and other area schools recently participated in a regional Junior FIRST®LEGO® League Expo at Sanford. The event was designed to build interest in science and engineering in children ages 6 through 9. A few weeks ago, twenty fifth and sixth grade Sanford students recently participated in a FIRST® LEGO® League competition at the Conrad School of Science. The event provided a great opportunity for middle school aged students to get involved in hands-on engineering, mathematics, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Musicians receive All-State honors

Four Sanford musicians have been selected for All-State Band and Orchestra. Congratulations to Junior Band honorees Jessica Zbranak (clarinet) and Chase Rapine (alto sax); Senior Band selection Adam Bubes (trumpet); and high-scoring violinist Younsoo Park who was selected for the orchestra.

Students honored for service

Adam Caulfield, Cheris Congo, and Mia Pastore have received Sanford’s first Jefferson Awards of this school year. The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. The freshmen were selected as a result of their outstanding commitment to Sanford’s Empty Bowls Project, a grassroots program designed to fight hunger in America. Their efforts during the summer resulted in the creation of 90 ceramic bowls that will be sold along with many other hand-crafted bowls at a Sanford event later this year. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Food Bank of Delaware.

Sophomore selected for leadership seminar

Radhika Malhotra has been selected to represent Sanford at this year’s Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar. A widely acclaimed international program, HOBY’s three-day youth leadership seminars have have motivated thousands of students across the United States to become even more involved in leadership and volunteer activities. Radhika’s selection was based on her demonstrated leadership ability, service, and communication skills.

Sanford seniors Mike Brennan and Madelyn Wojnisz recently earned Eagle Scout and Gold Awards respectively. These honors represent the highest achievements in the boy and girl scouting programs.

Senior class sponsors holiday food drive

Sanford’s senior class is sponsoring a holiday food drive with support from Hockessin area businesses. If you would like to contribute canned goods or non-perishable items, place your donations in the decorated boxes available at many Hockessin businesses by December 17th. All items collected will be delivered to the Food Bank of Delaware during Sanford’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in January.

Kudos to our outstanding soccer players

Two Sanford seniors have received post-season soccer honors. Jordan Poarch, who will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall, was named a regional All-American and first-team All-State selection. Sanford lifer Parker Landau received third-team All-State honors. Both student-athletes were also selected to play in this year’s Blue-White All Star game.
