The student body began the day with an assembly honoring the work of the slain civil rights leader. Afterward, students, staff members, and family volunteers contributed their time and talent on and off campus to a variety of organizations including Faithful Friends, the Latin American Community Center, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Food Bank of Delaware, and Heifer International.

The event honors commitment to excellence in women’s athletics, and proceeds support women’s athletic programs at Delaware State University. Four-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. The event will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Dover on February 19, 2010.

The story will be available online until June 30th at http://galleryofwriting.org/galleries/46036.

The All-State Senior Band members are juniors Hannah Wagner and Katie Grant. Freshmen Adam Bubes and Erik Somerville were selected for the All-State Junior Band. David Hoffman, an eighth grade Middle School student, was chosen for the All-State Junior Jazz Band.

This competition was in conjunction with the museum’s recent tour entitled Paths of Progress: Patents Past and Present. Students were asked to compose a composition which explored the role of patents in safeguarding the intellectual property of our nation’s innovators. Maya’s essay examined the right of citizens to maintain their intellectual property and considered what society would be like if this right was not protected. As the winner of this contest, Maya received a $100 cash prize.
